Jeff Mills

Jeff Mills is a pioneer in the Detroit Techno Collective scene. This influential Techno DJ cum producer was born on 18th June 1963 in Detroit, USA. Jeff took a liking to techno in his childhood and this was to develop into a passion as he approached adult hood. From hip hop to techno to hard house, he started exploring all kinds of music and sounds during his teens.

Jeff Mills moved to New York and after a short stay in places like Berlin he landed in Chicago. It was in Chicago that he set up his record label ‘Axis’. This was later followed by labels like ‘Tomorrow’, ‘Purposemaker’, and ‘6277’. His brilliant skills behind the decks have inspired a legion of followers. He is known to work at break neck speed, as he takes care of beats, frequencies, vinyls, and basslines, as only he can.

This multi-faceted personality was an influential radio DJ on WJLB, where he hosted a show under the alias ‘The Wizard Mills’. Mills also had a stint at the Detroit Public Radio Station WDET, when he was studying architecture. He would spin everything from Nine Inch Nails to Chicago House during those days. It was only after this that he worked with Tony Srock on projects like ‘Final Cut’. His ‘Metropolis’ track is just one example for his unique epic techno sound.

Jeff Mills is credited with championing the cause of techno music along with renowned names like Carl Craig, Robert Hood, and Joey Beltram. Jeff was in fact a founding member of the noted Motor City Institution Underground Resistance. He was behind the label ideology. His passion for high quality techno has catapulted him to an altogether different league, where is he setting the standards for others to emulate.
