Umek

Born and brought up in Ljubljana, Slovenia, DJ Umek began DJing in 1993. Umek became a pioneer in the local dance music scene and one of the biggest DJs after hosting his first rave parties. He along with his friends was responsible for putting up the first big parties in Slovenia.

This famous DJ has made techno the favorite form of music in Slovenia. He has his own record labels Consumer Recreation and Recycled Loops. He also releases tracks on Tortured, Planet Rhythm, Audio, Missile, and Electrix under the alias Zeta Reticula.

His ‘Massive Mumps’ released on Tortured in 2000 features his funky sound and has been the dance anthem in Slovenia for some time now. The restrictive regime in former Yugoslavia didn’t halt his prodigious talent from flowering. His passion is evident from the fact that he had to drive around ten hours to Germany to buy his favorite records, during the early days of Slovenia’s partition from former Yugoslavia.

He was the first to book international guests like Billy Nasty and Surgeon for playing at his parties in Slovenia. Umek has amazing abilities behind the decks and he is a bundle of energy. The ability to appeal to all kinds of audiences is his plus and his ‘Tortured Chamber’ mix released in 2002, exemplifies his music.

This hit was followed by a mix for Timewarp of Germany. Umek has also launched another label in 2000 called ‘Earrisistible’ with leading names like Pete Tong supporting his work. In his own words he loves to innovate and strives for constant improvement. He has been heard saying. “I want to be an all round producer, I need new challenges. I’ve got to a stage where my tastes have changed: I love electro, tech-house and percussive house, so what’s the point in just putting out banging techno?” Point understood Umek, give us something unique.
